Bottom of refrigerator hatch cover leaks water

Water damage –  My old Mirada had some very serious water damage under the refrigerator compartment caused by water leaking into the compartment from the bottom of the exterior hatch cover.  If you look at the bottom of the frame, there’s nothing to prevent water from draining to the inside of that frame. In fact,  there are  a couple small grooves in the bottom of the frame to make it easier for water to drain to the inside.

To prevent this from happening,  I run a small bead of RTV sealant along the bottom of the cover to form a lip. This prevents water from running to the inside of the frame.

There is no lip on the bottom of the frame, so any water that is resting on the bottom can drain to the inside of the compartment.

Run a bead of RTV sealant along the bottom. I used small wooden dowels to make it look nice

The finished lip will prevent water from draining to the inside of the refrigerator compartment.
