Reversing bath door so it swings other way

Original floor plan – Door opens toward front but cannot be opened all the way.

On the original floor plan,  when the bathroom door is opened, it swings out and forward. The door can’t swing completely open as it hits the frig cabinet.  This may have been done intentionally by the floor plan designers to perhaps block the bath / bedroom area from the living area.

The big drawback is the need to open / close the bath door anytime you want to use the bathroom from the living area.  The door is a great inconvenience for access between the front and rear of the Southwind.

After flipping door – door opens toward the rear and can be completely opened.

SOLUTION – Reverse the door in the frame. This modification takes about 30 minutes

By reversing the door in the frame,  it now swings toward the rear when its opened. The door can be opened all the way so it up against the wall and doesn’t impede traffic flow from the front to the back and to the bathroom.  I installed a magnetic catch to hold the door open.

Remove the 6 hinge screws on the forward part of the frame.

Flip the door so its now upside down.

Shim the door up off the floor so there is 1/8 inch gap between the top of the door and the frame.

Place the hinges against the frame and pre-drill small pilot holes for the hinge screws.  Install the hinge screws.  The door should now open toward the rear with a 1/8 inch gap at the top when the door is closed.

Remove the latch from the rear frame and install it on the front frame..

Remove the towel rack from the bottom and re-install it at the top of the door.

I installed a small magnetic catch on the top of the door to hold it when the door is open.

The new door opening allows easy access, and no more constant opening / closing the door to get from the front to the rear of the Southwind..
