Water heater exhaust duct repair

I noticed the exhaust guide inside the exhaust duct had been eaten away by corrosion.  The duct itself was still OK, just the internal guide was corroded and damaged.

I found a piece of stainless sheet metal in my scrap pile that will do the job.  I cut and bent it to fit inside the existing guide.  I used two screws in the back and two on the top secure it to the vain.  This repair will probably outlast the water heater.

  1. Do you know what your brand of water heater is? I have a 1999 Pace Arrow and my water heater looks very similar to yours. I am trying to figure out how to get the pilot light lit but cannot find any materials in my owner’s manual (i’m owner #4) that I was given when I purchased it a few weeks ago.

    • There is no pilot light. Its electronic ignition that lights the flame. You should hear a CLICKing sound of the spark. If you hear the click, but no ignition, you may not be getting propane to the burner.

      • Thanks for responding so quickly!. I will have to go outside and listen next time i am there. When i hit the water heater button inside, it clicks inside and the yellow ‘pilot out’ light blinks. sometimes it goes off, sometimes it stays on but it always comes back on.

      • Thanks. I hear a clicking sound when i turn it on inside but I haven’t tried while standing next to the water heater. I will troubleshoot that next. The propane seems to be getting to everything else in the RV. Someone else mentioned the element might need replacing.

        • The igniter rod also acts as a flame detector. Remove it and clean the rods with a green pot scrubby pad. Also – Using a large screwdriver, hit the gas valve a couple times with the screwdriver handle. If the valve is jaming a little, this will free it up.
